Purpose

It is required that all Day Care Attendants be professionally trained and attain their certificate before being able to work in a Day Care Facility.

A course has been implemented and will be run 2-3 times a year depending on enrollment. The course is 3 months in length. Upon passing the course, Attendant’s will receive a certificate including a Red Cross First Aid Certificate which allows them to work in registered Day Care Centres in Cape Coast.

Course Description

The course is run for a period of 3 months, broken into 3 sections.

The first section of the course is in the classroom, held at the Social Welfare Girls Vocational School in Pedu. This section of the course is about 2 months and held in the afternoon. There are three subjects taught each day. The subjects are:

• Methods of Teaching Young Children
• First Aid
• Customer Care
• Daily Routine and Management of Day Care Centres
• Nutrition and Personal Hygiene
• Simple Accounting and Records Keeping
• Child Development/Healthy Interaction
• Laws on Children
• Development of Teaching and Learning Materials
• Environmental and Religious Studies
• Numeracy/Creative Art/ Language and Literacy

The second section of the Course is a 4 week practical, where attendants go to different Day Care Centres and are assessed on their implementation of learned materials.

The third and final section is a 1 week examination period, where attendants are tested on the classroom materials. The week following the examinations will be the graduation and award of certificate.
